Beat:Ty Newydd
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:2
Although the water was perhaps 1ft. higher than ideal it was quite clear and grayling were feeding eagerly throughout the day. We caught and returned over 50 grayling (and 3 trout) on various klinkhammers but also on small goldheads and "bugs". Most of the fish were 10" to 12" with a few up to 16".
But we had competition: as we were leaving we saw an otter moving in the Bathing Pool. It did not seem disturbed by us in the least and caught at least one fish in the 10 minutes we were watching before it vanished in the direction of the Gravelly Pool.
Incidentally we saw three salmon moving: one in the Erwood Pool; another at the mouth of the stream in the Cilau Run and a third in the rocks below the stream under the left hand bank. Three canoists came through in the afternoon, keeping well out of our way where we were wading, but should they have been there?
WUF Note: The canoeists shouldn't have been there - we are still within the salmon season and the level was not above the red line on the Llanstephan gauge. Anglers are requested to notify the Foundation if you find canoeists breaking the access arrangements, especially if it is an identifiable group such as a canoe club or university.

Two salmon caught, both on a small double general practitioner. 1st fish of approx 15lbs taken from the middle planks and returned. The second fish of about 6lbs was taken from the top of beat. A very enjoyable day for me with my 1st two fish day, and my biggest salmon.

Fishing:Winter Grayling
River still high, fast & murky with a lot of flotsam and it took a while to find a fishable spot. A quieter stretch of water yielded 3 grayling and 1 small trout - all taken on a nymph and all returned. This is an attractive beat which I would like to revisit in less dramatic conditions.

I have fished all my life from the age of eight and only turned to game fishing about ten years ago. I am so pleased to record my first ever salmon on the fly. A hen fish of 10-12 lbs in good condition but very coloured. After a 10 minute fight in which the fish jumped 3 times it was returned unharmed and swam away strongly. I took 3 photos.
It took a shrimp pattern small tube fly at the bottom end of the beat. Also bumped another off I was too quick I think and caught one small female grayling. Went home a very happy angler.
Thank you Wye and Usk for your part in making my day.

Another great day booked through the Foundation, 3 trout rods and 1 salmon.
My first day back on the Wye in a couple of years was rewarded with 8 grayling ranging from 1/2 pound to a pound and a 1/2 pound brown trout taken on selection of nymphs, all returned.
Paul also had a good day with grayling the best of his 5 was about a pound and half, also 5 brown trout to around a pound as well.
Sam's first time out was successful with a nice grayling.
Paul saw one Salmon leap but unfortunately Matt didn't have any luck.

We arrived at the griffin inn at 8.30 for breakfast which was superb! (You must ring first) The river looked
perfect, running at 1ft6in above. As this beat is fly only it makes the method of fishing easy, William and myself fished up to 12.30 with no luck apart from finding that what I thought was a stone in my waders turned out to be a pound coin!(with that sort of luck how could we fail?) We broke off for lunch and headed off to the Wheelwrights Arms in the village (the food is spot-on.) We ended with a trout and and two salmon parr! We saw no salmon, but we had a great day. I know it was only three hours between meals, but William dragged me to the pub, and anyway it was for his birthday!
