Much debate given the weather forecast before we left this morning but the die was cast - no good waiting for all the ducks to line up, we risked the weather. The forecast was correct. Rain - not too bad if it had arrived on its own but it brought a freezing cold howling wind with it. A few hardy trout were rising and 7 succumbed to our decidedly damp dry flies - nice fish 7 - 13 inches, the one best of which was kept. Most of the fish were out of reach on the windward side of the river including a couple of persistent risers just above crocodile rock. One of our number on failing with numerous attempts to cover them from a safe wading depth had to go that bit further out - just about stayed dry but 2 long distance catch and releases were all he got for his bravery! We had to give up at 3 when all our fingers were too cold to tie on another fly.

Warm southerly wind and the Cuckoo in full song - what a difference a week makes! Fish taken on GRHE and GB GRHE and 3 on dries (olive Klink and Sedge pattern). Mostly 6-8oz but one just over 1 lb kept. Lovely day and the valley and black mountains looked superb on the way home.

Fish now starting to switch on to the Grannom. There was sporadic hatches from 10am with fish feeding on the top at these times. Fished pocket water with nymphs on a French leader to good affect.
I caught the better fish on dries apart from the best of the day which I estimate to be about 2lb. I can't really count it though as it was caught on the dangle while sorting out a tangle! It's amazing how often that happens...

The day started slowly with little rising and bright sunshine. During the afternoon nymphs were fished progressively deeper until about 4pm when the fish were found. A size 16 Copper John being the pattern doing all the work.
A lovely wbt of approx 15inch and 3 graying in the 10 - 12inch bracket were then taken in the next hour or so. At 5:30pm I called it a day.
Another good day's fishing assisted by the helpful staff at the WUF.

A strong, cold wind couldn't stop what was a terrific olive hatch during the middle part of the day, with the river coming alive with rising fish in bursts of a few minutes each time. A few grannom tried to put in an appearance but I expect they were as frustrated by the downstream wind as we were.
Despite the conditions we both landed a fair few trout and some OOS grayling. About half took olive patterns and klinkhammers off the top, with the others falling to gold-headed nymphs.
With calmer conditions forecast for the rest of the week, there should be some fun to be had.

River was in good condition, weather conditions made the fishing challenging. From midday onwards, during the warmer interludes, there were 2 or 3 sparse hatches which in turn induced the fish to briefly come to the top of the water.
Two of the fish listed above were small salmon parr.
Two of the trout were taken on small dry flies, the remainder of the fish were all taken on small gold head nymphs.

The trout were caught just before midday on the dry during a brief hatch of Olives. The wind was cold and also made made casting difficult at times blowing straight into our faces throughout the day.
The o/s grayling were taken on ptn, all fish were returned.
Thanks to the booking office, seamless process as always.
