Not a lot of water at the moment and the sun (not overcast and rain BBC) didn't help matters on this great beat but we both enjoyed the day. It started with a quick preview of the beat where we spotted a a large otter patrolling below the salmon pool, a great sight but unnerving when my mate told me how much fish they need to consume to survive, and what if there were pups ?!
I managed to net a smallish wbt at the start and then went to find where my partner was. I can still see it now, I found him in a nice looking run under quite a bit of tree cover, looking dazed and confused, wrapped up in line annd holding a "birds nest" in his hand. In three casts he'd had a brief meeting with a "Penpont Porker" that dove rolled and shed the hook and then netted a very good fish only for it to leap out again when trying to remove the fly. He now knows what this beat is capable of and has vowed to return, unfinished business apparently.

Had a lovely day on a really nice beat. Tough days fishing due to non cooperative fish but managed to snag three small Browns and lost a much bigger fish due to barbless hooks. All caught on beaded nymphs in the fast water. Very pleasant owner with good parking and access.

Cold north easterly, only saw a handful of rises. All taken on a tungsten bead quill nymph under an indicator.

It all started so well - a lovely fish to a mayfly pattern in the lower section of the beat. Two more fish on nymphs as I made my way through the broken water - and that was that. Very little activity on the surface despite an abundance of fly life.

It was high and full of colour Sat day and avo, beginning to clear in the eve. Rained over night and on Sun morning it was up again. Only came good on Sunday eve, when I could get down next, and the trout were finally on the rise and the river back to a good level and clearer.
Had one on early eve and it came off after short, but great fight. Beautiful beat and lovely owners. Missed it very much.

A lovely first visit to the Usk, unfortunately a tad swollen and muddy due to recent thunderstorms but still seemingly an entomologists dream. Very few rising however, so nymphs were deployed through most of the day on my 7' 3#, to end with a couple of 8" B.T. one on a green GH, one on klink and dink. Tried a heavy nymph in pocket water, and a dry late in the day (water dropped and cleared in the day) to no avail.
An interesting beat with plenty of variety, items of note; good access, handy facilities onsite due to campsite, some disturbance around house/camp if you seek total solitude - plenty of water to explore.
Saw dippers at close range, a merganser with 7 chicks, otter tracks, other birds and insects aplenty. Thank you W&U

River high and full of colour most of day. Dropped off and clearing by eve. Fish seemed spooked by flood. Not a single rise. Beautiful re-exploring this fantastic beat again. Loved it.

Return visit from a couple of days ago to fish the lower sections. The river is in reasonable condition but the slowest sections are a bit murky.
Massive amount of fly life throughout most of the day but with very little surface activity. Managed to rise 7 on deer hair emerger and yellow may fly pattern. Best was 11". For those that don't know -( I didn't) - the bottom fields on both banks are camping and caravanning sites. I only fished there as I spotted a few rises but I failed to connect. I suspected that these fish were a fair size. Managed not to hook a tent or the helpful child who was lobbing rocks into the river.
Moved upstream and stayed until 6:00ish when thunder indicated a storm approaching - so decided it was not best to stand in a river with a 10' lightning conductor in my hand!

Fantastic piece of river - had a great day plus as a bonus one fish felt sympathy for me and he went back happy. I am very new to this game - I watched and matched the hatch as it swarmed across the river but nothing was hungry. Not a single rise. I understand someone caught 12 from here the day before so maybe they were still suffering swollen lips.
