5 x grayling 10-14 inches, 2 x chub in the 3-4 pounds range, 3 x out of season trout 9-13 inches, trotting. At 2ft 3 inches and still plenty of colour, the river was higher than I had hoped for and racing along when I arrived. Not much doing to begin with, but as the level dropped and the water cleared a few fish were picked up by searching the slacker areas. Which is exactly what the cormorants and goosanders were doing.

Just 2 small grayling. Lovely beat though and was spoilt by fine views with autumn colours in a moody sunlight for most of the day.

Thought I would get a day in before the forecast cold snap; I know the grayling like it cold but it's not so good for me. It turned out to be 10 deg with some sun around so quite pleasant. With the Llanstephan gauge showing 10" the river was quite low for the time of year. Found the fishing quite hard work with not many fish about, or so it seemed to me. Managed 4 grayling to 12" all on an olive spider as top dropper. The usually successful red tag and beadhead GRHE on middle dropper/point were ignored. Tried to avoid the faster shallower water to give the trout a break but nevertheless had a couple, also on olive spider. As the light faded a few rises suggested dry fly but tying them on in the aforesaid fading light was beyond me so end of session. Nice to see a salmon splashing around and a kingfisher.

It was an enjoyable days fishing on the Wye today and the river was at perfect height, we started out fishing the lower part of the beat and the Wye and Usk Foundation are correct about needing felt soled waders as it is extremely slippy and I fell in and was almost swept away. All the fish were caught on a size 16 tungsten headed pheasant tailed nymph with a hint of green flash in the head and a pink Czech nymph. A spiral indicator was very useful to detect the subtle bites.

River level 18" on the Llanstephan gauge. Most grayling about 10" but one at 14". The two trout were 10-12". My first visit to this beat and I agree with the WUF that there is lots of trout and grayling water to be fished with a nice variety of water. Fished a team of three flies with a weighted Red Tag on point and Hancock's Pet and Partridge & Orange as droppers. All caught fish as, after a change, did a Snipe & Purple. Managed to lose my landing net - should be floating down through Monmouth about now I reckon.
