What a difference 7 months can make! I fished this beat back in June 2017 and had my best ever day of fly fishing, with 50+ fish, and Grayling virtually throwing themselves onto my hook! This time it was a different story... zero fish... not even a sniff. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong, but the fish weren't interested in any of my attempts.
A beautiful, but very cold day, the ground stayed frozen in the shadows all the whole time. I walked all of the beat, trying out various sections that looked 'right', and places I have caught before. The river was high (around 65cm on the Lugg gauge (I know this is the Arrow), with a good strong flow to it. A nice bit of colour, but relatively clear. I tried fishing sections in deep shade, then full sunlight, and then when it became overcast. Tried various nymphs of a Klinkhammer indicator, but it was not to be my day.

River was a tad high still, and running quite cloudy. Beautiful beat, only fished for 1.5 hrs on top half. Hooked 1 OOS trout, otherwise blanked.

The river was still running a bit high but was clear and just about fishable although wading against the current was hard work. It was a good day despite an early finish due to wading boot failure! The biggest grayling took a pink shrimp and gave me a new pb. The net in the photo is 15" long. That fish and another bore signs of probable cormorant damage as can be seen in the photo. Other successful flies were a ptn and squirmy wormy ( sorry OB!).

Booked this in the hope of getting some fishing in over the holiday period, however it was unfortunately a wash-off - river was high, fast & coloured. Lovely setting, look forward to trying it in more suitable weather.

Lovely five hours on the lugg, cold day at lyepole not rising above 1 degree. The sun was up though which was very pleasing. All grayling taking shrimp and gammarus patterns in natural colours fished on the river bed. Grayling ranged from 7- 16 inches with the majority around the 10-12 inch mark.

Very hard going today 3 small grayling to nymphs. Lost a few slipping the hook before I could bring them to hand. A small hatch of dark olives appeared around mid day. Saw a couple of small grayling rise so switched to dry fly for and hour but no response. In hindsight I could have done with a few more heavier nymphs as they only seemed interested in taking nymphs bouncing bottom.

Once again a lovely stretch of water, but high levels and flows together with lots of colour put the fish off. Hopefully next time our trip will be more productive when conditions are more favourable.
