It turns out cloudless blue skies and burning sunshine are not ideal for catching trout... very tough conditions. Pricked a few in the shady margins and finally caught a half pounder. It was my first time at this beat. The access to the river for most of the lower half is frankly poor. If you can get to it, the river is a gem. I'll come back when conditions are better.

the weather was clear and sunny, and the river at a perfect height for this beat. Fish rose throughout the day, but mainly in the glides where they were easily spooked. A challenging day on a great beat.

A hot and sunny day on a very low river. Quite a lot of Mayfly about, but never saw one taken. Little sign of life until a few fish started rising very close in. Assumed they must be tiddlers as in very shallow water but surprised to catch 3 all about 10-12" on a deer hair emerger. I then noticed several fish rising some way upstream, again mostly in very shallow water at the tail of the pool. Rise was starting to peter out as I got there and I lined the first fish in my haste which didn't help matters. However, some more sporadic activity got underway in deeper water and I was pleased to catch a very lively cock fish of 18" and his smaller brother of 16". However, then missed several takes and caught no more before I had to leave. A really nice beat, but some access points getting hard to spot.

A warm, overcast day with plenty of fly life on the water throughout the day. However, the river was very low (some way below the bottom of the local gauge) so the fish were reluctant to show. Some splashy rises, but the fish were easily spooked and very selective.

4 healthy sized trout caught on mayfly patterns. A lovely secluded stretch of the Usk. At least 3 good sections of riffley type water that will interest the fly fisher; interspersed with longer, deeper, canal like stretches. Plenty of fish rising and an abundance of fly life.

Very hot, with a strong breeze. Despite a cloudless day, there was no shortage of fish rising. This was a day for throwing away the text books, as fish were rising in very shallow water, in blazing sunshine, and were very interested in flies skating across the water at the end of the cast, sometimes making a grab at it! All this action plainly visible and also on occasion where a group of 'dimple' rises were encountered, these turned out to be good fish, but highly selective. We caught seven trout for the day, with one of 2.25lbs, four of 2lbs, and two smaller. All fish safely returned. Vey enjoyable day. Mostly caught on small dries.
