Beat:Abernant
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
A quiet start at the bottom end of the beat with a few fish rising, some takes, but nothing caught. Three fish caught early pm at the start of the flats just over half way up the beat, then nothing for a couple of hours. The remainder caught late afternoon, again in the flats. All fish caught on emergers.
Only the first 30 meteres or so of the flats are fishable, the remainder being inaccessible due to excessive undergrowth. In short, only just over half of the beat can be fished.

This was my first opportunity river fishing in the UK and I am glad I picked this stretch of the Wye. A beautiful and productive beat. Fishing just the early morning and evening sessions I landed two brown trout, both taken on dries, however, a more experienced fisherman would have had an absolute field day. Fish were feeding on the surface throughout both sessions and I missed a lot of takes.
Water was a bit murkier than expected. Most of the river I could wade. I found the upper stretches more difficult to access and in the evening session stayed in the lower reaches to avoid a canoeist party who were set up on the shores in front on the farm house on the opposite bank.

Took advantage of the evening ticket offer for a few hours after work - fished from about 7.30pm until about 9.30pm at which point I had to concede defeat to the failing light in my attempt to tie on a new fly. River had lifted an inch and water temps had dropped a few degrees from their highs last week - everything certainly felt a little fresher,
and fishier. Although it was pretty quiet for the first hour, from then on there were plenty of confident and consistent risers to target with a little BWO pattern. Caught 6 ,including a cracking grayling of 15.5 inches, and lost/missed a couple more.

Fishing well during the morning session with fish caught on wet fly. A large number of fish caught using nymphing method. Slight disruption caused by swimmers staying at Abernant House on the opposite bank. Water level very low with a lot of sediment.

Alternated between a single dry fly and team of wet flies. The wet flies proved the more effective. Tough fishing conditions in the bright summer sun but great fun nonetheless and learnt a lot with Oliver Burch!

After my close encounter a month or two ago and seeing the river had risen during the week I thought there might be a slim chance of a salmon today, however upon arrival the river was well and truly back on its knees, very low. However while walking to the river seeing a huge silvery salmon leap clear of the water before crashing back down had me quite excited again, even if it was in the adjoining down stream water. A salmon was always going to be a long shot so an hour or two on a dry fly resulted in a nice Grayling and a trout of about 8’, I also managed to miss 10-12 other rises, still trying to figure out why.
Another lovely day on the river, thank you.
